We just switched from Dish Network to DirecTV for our TV service. I’ve thus spent the past few days familiarizing myself with the system and getting things customized to our tastes. As part of this, I’ve been setting up a custom list of favorite channels.
Yes, it really is necessary to pare down the list of channels. There are hundreds of channels available, many of which are of little or no interest to us. This includes dozens of shopping channels, all kinds of pay-per-view channels, multiple religious broadcasting channels, etc.
The good news is that it’s very easy to create a list of favorite channels by going to:
Settings > Settings & Help > Favorite Channels
The bad news is that it’s impossible to share these channel lists across devices. This means that you have to go through the channel selection process one each and every TV. And if you make changes in the future, you’ll need to apply them at each TV separately.
Why? Who knows. If the Genie DVR can shuttle digital video to other TVs via the Genie Mini devices, then surely it’s at least theoretically possible to move a list of channels from one device to another. But alas, you can’t.
For the record, this is with the latest version of the Genie whole house DVR system (HR44) with three attached Genie Mini devices (C41). Bottom line: It’s a great system overall, but with some annoying (and arbitrary) limitations.
