How to Get Rid of the AVG Security Toolbar

As a quick followup to my previous post about replacing Avira with AVG… My son just asked how to get rid of the AVG toolbar in his Firefox window. I looked and, sure enough, there it was… The AVG Security Toolbar.

This toolbar gets installed by default when you install AVG, but you can uncheck a box to prevent installation. I could’ve sworn that I had, but I guess not.

The toolbar itself is fairly innocuoous, but it takes up space which is especially problematic when you’re running on a netbook. Thus, we wanted to get rid of it.

Unfortunately, it’s not easy to remove the toolbar without uninstalling AVG. That being said, it’s easy enough to hide it. To do so in Firefox, simply:

  1. Click the “View” menu
  2. Go to the “Toolbars” submenu
  3. Unselect “AVG Security Toolbar”

If you decide you want it back, just follow the above steps and re-select the toolbar to once again make it visible.

No…you may well have unchecked the toolbar. I have been trying to figure out how to get rid of it all day. I did an uninstall of the free version because everything I tried failed. The toolbar was still on CHROME after removing AVG. I installed a version which was from EVERY indication ‘free’, (and unchecked the toolbar) but after it finally finished installing, told me it was free for 30 days. I absolutely know I had unchecked the toolbar option, but got it anyway. While uninstalling this AVG, it gave me an option to have the free version. I took the option and it reconfigured, but not giving me any way to release the toolbar…I have already tried a couple of different things I saw online. I will probably try to go back to a restore point but am motivated to find a different virus protection. I already know I don’t want to pay for the bully AVG.

I found it easy to disable the AVG toolbar in Google Chrome’s drop down tool menu, under OPTIONS/BASIC/SEARCH drop down menu. It is actually one of the choices. Just choose Google again.
