How to Change the Default Margins in Word 2011

Have you ever noticed that Microsoft — for some unknown reason — has set the default left/right margins in Word to 1.25 inches. Seriously? 1.25 inches? What a waste… Of both time spent changing it and paper when people don’t bother.

Well, today I had finally had enough, so I decided to figure out how to change the default margins. The good news? It’s super easy. The bad news? It took me a long time to get around to figuring it out.

To change the default margins in Word 2011:

  1. Pull down the “Format” menu.
  2. Select “Document…” from the list.
  3. Change the margins.
  4. Click the “Default” button.
  5. Hit “Yes” to change the “NORMAL” template.

That’s it. From here on our, all of your documents will have plain old one inch margins from the get-go. And if you’re too lazy (or forgetful) to change it on a per-document basis, you’ll also use less paper.
