Honda Odyssey Drive Light Flashing (Again!)

by Michael on March 3, 2011 · 7 comments

Last fall the drive light started blinking on our Honda Odyssey. According to the manual, this light signals possible transmission trouble. We were thus relieved to learn that we just needed to swap out the 4th gear pressure switch.

Well, guess what? Here we are, just six months later, and the green drive light has started blinking again. We took it into the mechanic this morning and have since learned that our beloved minivan was throwing off the same error code as before – P1740 – which indicated that the 4th gear pressure switch had once again gone bad.

Obviously, I’m less than thrilled by this. While it’s possible that they simply installed a faulty switch that went bad before its time, my gut is telling me that we’re dealing with something more serious. We haven’t seen any other symptoms of trouble, but I’m having a hard time chalking this up to coincidence or bad luck.

As you may be aware, the 2nd generation Honda Odyssey (first built in 1999) has a history of transmission problems. While that was supposed to be resolved in 2001, problems persisted through at least 2003. I’m now starting to suspect that the problems lingered through 2004, which was the final year of this design.

Ugh. We’re still awaiting final word from our mechanic, but I have a feeling that this is just the start of our transmission troubles. If you’ve dealt with similar problems in the past, I’d love to hear any words of wisdom that you might be able to offer.

Have you gotten this issue resolved? We also have a 2004 Odyseey with 150k miles. The drive light started blinking last week for the first time. It hasn’t happened since, but I’m wondering if I should trade it in before any potential problems arise.

Jeremy: Our transmission ultimately failed and had to be rebuilt. Hopefully you won’t face the same fate…

So, my light blinked 1 time (last week). I just changed my transmission fluid and the mechanic (not at Honda) said that as long as I haven’t noticed any shifting issues, I should be fine. I sure hope he’s right. Were you having any slipping?

2002 Odyssey and the “D” light stared flashing about six months ago and then stopped once I turned off the car. It just happened again today 144K and once again it went back to normal after I stopped and restarted the car. The car has the original transmission.

My 2002 Odyssey and the “D” light started flashing tonight. When I turned the car off and back on it went away. I have 128k and have the original transmission also.

I have a 2004 Odyssey 140k miles the D flashed one time, turned off the van and turned back on and it has not flashed again. As long as there is no problem with shifting I will ignore the flashing D if it happens again.
