I recently needed to change the batteries in our garage door opener remotes. While at the store, I guessed (correctly) based on memory and appearance that I needed a CR2032 coin-style battery. The alternative was the similar-looking CR2025.
These CR2025 and CR2032 are both 3V lithium batteries that are identical in diameter. When I returned home, I actually found an unopened pack of CR2025 batteries in the kitchen cabinet so I did a side-by-side comparison.
So what’s the difference between the CR2025 and the CR2032?
As it turns out, the only thing that differs between these batteries is thickness (and hence capacity). The CR2025 is thinner than the CR2032, but they otherwise seem to be interchangeable — assuming you can make them fit your device equally well.
The thicker CR2032 is typically rated for 240 mAh whereas the thinner CR2025 is typically rated for 163 mAh.
Thus, the CR2032 will last somewhat longer than the CR2025 under otherwise equivalent circumstances. And of course the CR2032 may be too thick (or the CR2025 may be too thin) for your desired application — though there are possible workarounds.
For example, I needed a new battery in my Suunto heart monitor chest strap last night and had already used the CR2032 batteries that I had bought. Thus, I used a CR2025 and “shimmed” it into place with a small piece of folded-over note card.
While I’m not planning on this as a long-term solution, it worked in a pinch.

We have a remote control for our car. According the the mfg we should use the 2032. Previously we had a 2025,which worked fine. We I replaced it with a 2032 the remote on longer works. Put the 2025 back in and it’s working again. How so?
The remote probably had a failsafe that sensed the higher amperage and wouldn’t allow the circuit to close so as to protect it. Kinda like a circuit breaker in your house.
To say they can always be substituted makes many assumptions.
Is the amperage different between a 2032 and a 2025? It should be 0.2 milliamps for both. The mAh is different (165 mAh vs. 225 mAh), but that’s just how long the battery lasts, not how many amps. …and would it matter if the amperage was higher? My understanding is that the amperage of the power source should be equal-to or greater-than the specified amount (but not less-than). The device will only draw what it needs and not more.
But I’m no electrician. I haven’t had to know about any of this since high school, and I’m just re-learning a few things for a couple projects right now. Maybe I’m wrong.

Andrew, you are exactly right. Whatever amperage an instrument draws it still draws the same no matter what is available.
The difference is the thickness of the battery … a CR2032 is thicker thus might not be making contact correctly

Tried the shim on. Battery in garage door opener and it worked . The 2025 was as you said a little slimmer but w/ the card stock shim it worked. Thx

Hello just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading properly.
I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same outcome.
For the coin cells, the first 2 numbers are the diameter in mm. The second 2 numbers are thickness in mm with a decimal point. So for a 2032 it is 20mm across and 3.2mm thick. Works for all coin cells with that numbering scheme.
Had the 2032 in my remote key fob Odyssey, light went on to replace the battery in them at exactly 25000 miles . Seems to be a build in to warn you at that time not the battery condition. Replaced it with 2025’s and now it’s been working for 14 months no problems. I did check the 2032 with a battery meter and they both shower 100% at time of warning and replacement… My experience is that the low battery could be a dash warning set by miles on car not signal power from the remote, why dash warning went off after they where replaced , I don’t know…

Tried the 2032 in my vizio sound bar, it worked once then shut down. I noticed
a 2025 on the battery case and will try them. The battery from the producer vizio was a 2032, but I never used remote and thought battery dead. I will try 2025 and let you know results.
Simple you got circuit bleaker in your house 20 amps, you can put anything higher 25 30 35 etc,its ok but if you put 15 amps then there would be no power..why?coz what ever system you got and what ever it needs thats all it takes from the main source of power,..but this wont apply on fuses you rather replace fuse than replace the whole machine or old house that still equipped with high voltage system
