Have you ever wished you could change the sort order of your notebooks in Evernote? Well, you can’t. They sort alphabetically, and there’s not anything you can do about it. Or is there?
Well, for starters, you can group notebooks into stacks. This gives you some degree of control over the sort order, though the notebooks are still sorted alphabetically within the stacks, and the stacks themselves are sorted alphabetically.
To gain a higher degree of control over the sort order, you have to resort to the use of special characters. Simply pre-pend a special character to the name to change where a particular item falls in the list.
For example, add a hyphen (-) to make the item sort ahead of all alphanumeric titles. Add an underscore (_) to make it sort ahead of alphanumeric titles, but behind hyphens. Etc.
Note that numbers sort ahead of letters, and that some characters sort ahead of numbers, some afters numbers but before letters, and some after letters.
Update: Here’s a rundown of the sort order of common characters.
Within character types, the notebooks will still sort alphabetically (e.g., -inbox will sort ahead of -notes). With a bit of experimentation, you can achieve just about any sort (no pun intended) of organization that you desire.
