A bit over a year ago, we replaced our HP LaserJet 1200 with a Brother 2170W laser printer. Overall, we’ve been very happy with our purchase, though I’ve found it to be a bit aggressive when it comes to telling us to replace the toner cartridge.
Instead of letting the toner run down to the point where you’re no longer happy with the print quality, the Brother 2170W has an electric eye that looks through a little round window in the side of your cartridge to see if the toner is starting to get low.
I’m not 100% sure how it works, but it seems to give you a low toner warning when your toner level drops to the point that it can see through the cartridge. Unfortunately, once that happens, you won’t be able to print additional pages.
But guess what? Your toner cartridge isn’t empty when this happens. Don’t believe me? Try covering up that window with some electrical tape and printing more pages. It works!
Depending on which size cartridge you’re using, you may be able to get another 500-1000 pages before you need to replace it.
